Arkansas to Africa {Part 12 Hopping a Plane}

I have had several people ask me, "how in the world did y'all wind up in Africa"?

Most of the time that ends with me stuttering around and giving some kind of a lame answer.

Not because there isn't a really good (non-lame) answer,
but because it is hard to know where to get started.

Sooo, I thought I would begin to share the story that God wrote for us.
It is a looonng story that spans many years.
But don't worry, no chapter book today!
I will give it to you a bit at a time!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I left off last with our plans to go ahead and move to Malawi and wait on our girls' US Visas. We had booked our tickets to move to Malawi with the rest of our team in July 2013.

A few weeks before our departure date, we received incredible news from the US Embassy!  Our investigation was complete! It was time to go pick up our girls! So, in a whirlwind, we canceled our Malawi tickets and booked tickets to go pick up our girls in DRCongo.  In July, we traveled to the airport and sent off the two families that were on our team. We said, "see you later" and went back home to our empty house. It was a strange feeling not going with the rest of our team, but exciting also that we were just days away from meeting our girls!

On August 4, 2013, we boarded a plan to DRCongo! It was really the most surreal feeling. Finally completing our family after  3.5 years of waiting. This was our first time to land on the continent of Africa, and it was all just full of so many emotions as we had been dreaming about this day for so long!

On August 6, after a night of no sleep because of excitement jitters, a van pulled up in front of our hotel. Out popped two little girls.... our girls. A few quick words about schedules and likes/dislikes, and then we were alone. We were now mom and dad to 2 little ones that we had been staring at for months in photos.

We spent 3 weeks in DRCongo completing paperwork and waiting...lots and lots of waiting. We weren't allowed to leave our hotel very much, so the days were long. We missed our boys terribly and were ready to get back to the States so we could complete all the next steps to start our lives in Malawi. Understandably, there was lots of trauma and hard adjustments as we got to know each other and learn to trust. Looking back, I wish I could have whispered in my ear, "it's all going to be ok, it's just going to take time."

Three weeks later, we received our much anticipated Exit Letters and we rushed to the airport at dark to catch our flight. Five weeks later, the country quit issuing Exit Letters and held onto this suspension for over two years. We made it through the long, rough flights and landed back in Arkansas in late August 2013. All four of us were ready to be done with those flights and we were anxious to be back with the boys and start life as a family of six! I wrote more about our adoption here.

Now that we were back on American soil, we had several things to do to get ready for our move. We had to re-adopt the girls in our State, apply for SS #"s, wait on green cards, get new birth certificates and US passports. We lived in the States (in our empty house) for six weeks while we applied and waited for these documents. Looking back, I am still amazed that God accomplished all those things in six short weeks!

In those six weeks we tried to cocoon our family in so we could bond and become a new family. We also tried to soak in as much time as we could with our families since we were going to be moving away soon. It was an interesting transition time.

I think the next installment of AR to AF will be the last! When I started off writing this series, I never dreamed it would take me 13 installments and almost 3 years!

{thirteen} a teenager birthday post

On June 10th, our oldest entered into teenage-hood.
This has felt so big for our family!
I didn't notice all the changes that have happened this year until I looked back on last years pictures. Our kid is really growing up (sniffle)!

Past birthdays:

We wanted to make this birthday a big milestone birthday, which feels a little tricky when you are living overseas. But, we tried our best!
I do love how our kids have grasped onto the simple parties.
Choosing their favorite meal, simple gifts, and some friends over and they will declare it
"the best day ever".

Z has been counting down the days until his birthday for awhile!
He picked his favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

He had his friends over for a water balloon war.

His grandparents and cousins had sent gifts with a visiting team, so he had several presents to open up through out the day.

We have two other families living here with us, two interns, and a visiting friend.
So, we had a full house for his party!

We had been filing away some ideas for his birthday from other families we admire and from books we have read. We wanted to make this milestone birthday about THREE things:

Privilege
Responsibility
Biblical Man-hood

Privilege in our family, where we live, means later bed times and some more movie options.

Responsibility at 13, looks like Zander having to wash his own clothes and also owning the lawn mowing in our back yard. We want to be intentional about preparing him for adult-hood and giving him more responsibilities to learn hard work and excellence. We are hoping to continue to add to the privilege and responsibility areas each year until he is ready to fly on his own after high school graduation.

The Biblical Man-hood piece was really fun! We contacted a couple hand-full of men that have been consistent in Zander's life. These men are guys that Zander looks up to and strive to chase after God. We asked these men to write letters to Zander for his birthday. The letters were so awesome! I teared up with each letter as they came in because they were EXACTLY what I was wanting for Zander. The notes were filled with encouragement and words of affirmation. They laid out what it looks like transitioning into man-hood, ways that Satan will try to trip him up, and even personal challenges that they faced when they were his age. David and I also added a letter to the mix! We are praying that these letters will be read over and over again as he encounters the blessings and challenges as he transitions into adult-hood.

Uncle Titus and Aunt Ashley gifted Zander with their telescope! Such a special gift!

All the Esther's House kids came over and we enjoyed lots of cake and playing!
This years' cake request was sugar cookie cake on top and bottom with funfetti cake in the middle (Thanks Tyler ;)

We're so thankful for all who helped make his day special!

I always enjoy taking pictures of my kids on their birthdays and Zander reluctantly allowed me to snap a few pics in the back yard.

Gosh, we love this kid so much!

I definitely feel like we are entering a new era of parenting and a new phase of beginning that "let- go" process as we give more privileges and responsibilities. I am praying that our relationship will continue to grow and morph and will come out stronger on the other side! Friends with kids in the stage ahead of us, we are watching you and grabbing on to any advice you can give us!

ELEVEN {birthday post}

Ahhh, these birthdays just won't stop.
And while I am so proud of my kids and the people they are coming, these birthdays are so bittersweet.
The time is just going by so fast.
Every time I do one of these birthday posts, I remind myself to just soak it all up.

This month, our G man turned 11!

Past birthday posts below:

Grainger is our out-going, silly, confidant guy!
He develops friendships easy with kids and adults.
Usually when we are out and about without kids, adults will always ask, "Ah, how is Grainger?"
He is a favorite of our guards and when he goes out to talk to them at night, you can hear them laughing and chatting in Chichewa.

This picture just sums him up!
Goofy and loves to make people laugh.
He is quite the joke-ster.

G loves to process his feelings verbally (which is a lot).
He loves to cook and many times I will come in late from work to find he has already made dinner!
He enjoys drawing, building Lego's and playing football (soccer).

He is either best friends or worst enemies with his siblings.
He is usually the first to apologize when he has sinned and lost self control and recognizes the convictions of the Holy Spirit.
He has a huge heart for the under dog and for the elderly.
We sure do love our guy!

Chatbooks

I tend to be late to the party....and even more so since living overseas, but I just LOVE Chatbooks!
I am such a sentimental person!
I love memories with my favorite people!

I take lots of pictures, but they never get printed and tend to just get stored on the computer.
So, I was pretty excited to learn about Chatbooks through a friend.
If you haven't heard of these sweet little books, watch this entertaining video to learn all about it!

I chose to have my Chatbooks linked to my Instagram account.
I downloaded the app and within minutes, I had all of my pictured uploaded onto the app and arranged into books.
I spent about an hour editing and re-arranging the photos.
This is with sllooooowwww dial-up speed internet out here in rural Malawi.
When your book has 60 pictures in it, you will automatically receive an email that your book is done. You then have 3 days to edit your book before it ships!

I had the books shipped to my mom's house since I knew we were going to travel back to the States for Christmas. I was really excited to get my hands on our memories!

The paper quality is nice and thick, the ink is vibrant.
Some of my first pictures I used on Instagram were from an Iphone 3, so the camera wasn't that great and my photos are grainy, but it really doesn't bother me, I just love having the memories!

The size of the books are about 6" x 6" and are an affordable $8!
Perfect for little hands (not mine, obviously, but the kids)

Each page has a date stamp and a place for captions (or no captions which I sometimes choose if I don't feel like dealing with it.)

My kids absolutely LOVE looking at the books.
They are nice and sturdy, so I don't stress about them tearing the books up.
I absolutely love how the girls now have books that include them in the family pictures!

Another feature of this app that is my favorite is the ability to upload pictures straight off of my phone camera. My kids are getting older and don't always want their pictures posted to Instagram (I try to always ask permission from them first).

Being able to "add a photo" allows me to add pictures without posting the photo to Instagram.
If you aren't a social media person, you can have ALL of your photos added to Chatbooks straight from your phone favorites.

Do you already do Chatbooks? Do you love them also?
Would you like to try Chatbooks for yourself?
I have a fun offer for you! Follow this link to get your first Chatbook FREE!
In full disclosure, I will also receive a $5 credit to my next book!
Win-Win for all!

ELEVEN

{Last years birthday post can be found here}

There is something about your first born that is so sentimental and special.
The child that changed you from a "couple" into a "family".
The child that rocked your world and taught you to put someone else's needs above your own.
The child that taught you a whole new level of love and made my understanding of God's love for me "click".
That is this guy to me.

Back when Zander was born, we had dial up internet and a flip phone.
Facebook was created the year he was born, but you know...the whole dial up thing; and instagram wasn't in existence.
Money was tight as we had just transitioned to a one- income family.
So, we really didn't get out a whole lot.
I spent most of my days just staring at this kid and relishing his every moment.
I remember watching him as he slept, laughing at every cute thing he did, and going for lots of walks.
He was my whole world for 22 months!

It is fun to watch him grow and turn into this man child, but it is also scary how fast it is happening!

He is my deep thinker, big feeler, dreamer, and intellect.

He also likes adventure and will try about anything!

Buddy, we love you so incredibly much. You are so special to us! Praying the years we have left to parent will be joyful {and slow down a little}. Being your parents is the highlight of our lives!

NINE

I tell ya folks, these birthdays are killin' me!
I mean, people tell you that time goes by fast, but until you are experiencing it with  your kids first hand, it is hard to comprehend how fast it truly goes by.

So here we go, in April, Grainger turned 9. His last year in single digits (sniff)
last years pics/interview can be found here.

Grainger is a kid who likes to joke around and make people laugh.

He loves making friends and words of encouragement is his love language.

He loves playing football (soccer) outside everyday with his friends and comes in each night at dusk filthy dirty and a big smile plastered on his face.

He is a momma's boy through and through and still likes to cuddle and hold hands.
(i am fully aware these days are numbered!)

He enjoys playing with his siblings, most of the time...
We have days of best friends and days of endless fighting, I guess that's how most siblings are.....

Life Currently

I have seen these posts going around lately and think they're fun!
Thought I'd record how life is "currently".

>> reading Beth Moore's Whispers of HOPE  devotional book on prayer. SO good!

>> watching Duck Dynasty, Season 6

.>> trying to continue getting up before my kids to spend time with Jesus and exercise. So hard to do (not a natural early bird), but always so glad I did. Three weeks in, takes 6 weeks to form a habit, right?!

>> eating PB&J and mangoes! So happy it is mango season again!

>>pinning Recipes from scratch that I can find ingredients for locally. Trying to skim over all the "pumpkin recipes" out there to prevent my "Fall envy". My recipe board can be found {here}. I pin a ton of school activities to use with my tutoring class which can be found {here}.

>>going to a new village yesterday and today to enroll new orphans in our community program.
I love my job!

>>loving the three little boys we got to enroll yesterday. The help we are going to be able to offer their family is going to make a huge impact on their daily lives!

>>discovering I need a little bit of "alone time" to get through my day. The 30 minutes my kids spend quietly playing in their rooms after lunch is my little slice of heaven. It is just what I need to re-group and recharge for the afternoon!

>>enjoying Our board member, Doug, brought us some goodies when he came in September, and one of those was UNO. We hadn't played that game in years, but are having so much fun spending a little time together in the evenings playing. The perfect game all 6 of us can play together!

>>thinking about how, as we hit the one year mark living in Malawi next week, that it really does feel like home here. Everything is slowly coming together and we are feeling our "new normal".

>>feeling excited that we are going to have a couple days of "family time" this weekend!

>> listening  to Asher having an imaginary conversation with her dolls and the EH kids playing outside my window.

>>thanking my husband, that he took the kids yesterday for the afternoon, allowing me to get outside the walls and get some work done. Thankful that we are a good team!

...starting the Jillian Michaels "yoga" video lately. Who knew Yoga could be SO hard?!

What is going on with you currently?

Schoolin'

Well, I figured today was as good a day as any to put up our "first day of school" seventh week of school photos!

It feels SO good to type out those words (seven.weeks!)
Last year, I think we hit week 7 in December.

A few lessons I have learned (the hard way) last year that I am trying (imperfectly) to improve on this year....

> Don't let the clock dictate life. We'll get done when we get done!
> Relationship over work.
A lesson can be done (or not) another day, maintaining my relationship with my kid is most important.
> Let them go! My oldest has always had a voracious reading appetite. He always is reading ahead. Last year I was afraid he would read out of order or not have anything left to do after Christmas. This year I am just letting him go and happy for his love of books. On the opposite, one of my children can't keep up with the reading. I am giving myself (and child) freedom to slow down and not stress over checking it all off, but doing what is best for each child.
> Momma must spend some face to face time with Jesus before spending it with kids.
> It's ok to go outside the lesson plan and tweak things to suit our interests!
> Don't compare child to child. They are each learning at their own pace and that is ok!
> deep breathes, choose joy, enjoy it
> some days, you may just need to close up the books and try again another day.

Some days teaching your own kids is tough, but I am trying to remind myself (sometimes hourly) that these days are passing by at warp speed. I can look at these pictures above and see all these permanent teeth growing in, and compare them to last year, and gasp at the changes that have occurred right under my nose in one quick year. I don't want to wish away any minutes, even the hard ones.

Any other homeschooling mommas out there? What are your favorite lessons you've learned the hard way?

These are THE days

My 10 year old walked in the kitchen the other day and all the sudden he looked GIGANTOR!
I took him to the door frame, where the recording of heights is taking place in our home, and discovered that he seemingly grew 3 inches over night.
Over.the.night!
He is currently coming up to my chin and I foresee him passing my 5'8" in the next couple of years.

My 8 year old is doing school more independently this year; needing me less. He tells jokes that make us all hold our sides and his dimple makes me want to say "yes" to everything he asks.

My 6 year old is learning to read. She has gained 15 pounds this last year and has grown half a foot. I can't keep her in clothes and her legs are as long as a jackrabbit. I think her growing incredibly fast is so bittersweet because I missed out on the first 5+ years of her life and I'm like, "slow down already!"

My 4 year old has grown with almost equal speed as her sister. She is joining us in school doing some  "pre-school" type activities. She is full of sass that would rival most pre-teens with drama and spunk.

And I am realizing, once again, that these days [right here] are fleeting.
They are growing up so fast!
I mean people tell you that it will happen, but you don't really get it until it happens with your own.
I want to soak every minute of them up.

This week, on our day off, we ventured out to try some new things.
A new town, a new place to eat lunch.
Watching the kids play in the grass.
Flying their paper planes.
Giggling, running, jumping, exploring.
A day just for the 6 of us, to pour back into our kids.
I treasure these days.

Having sweet days like this makes me want to try and be more intentional with my time with them.
I am with them 24/7, but I want to really be "in the moment" with them.
Look them in the eyes more.
Listen to their stories fully.
Manage my time better.
Because I know one day I'll look back and wish for more time with them.

I never want them to look back on our time here and feel like they were put on the back burner compared to our ministry.

Balancing family and ministry is a tricky one, but we are slowly finding our rhythm.

What do you do to spend intentional time with your kids? Love to hear your ideas/what works for your family!

{come back on Friday and I will tell you about part 2 of our Arkansas to Africa story}
